As one of Wight & Company’s first design-build school projects, the 57,500-square-foot Burr Ridge Middle School creates an environment that fosters team-based learning – the cornerstone of the District’s philosophy. This was achieved with four grade-specific clusters serving 5th through 8th grades, each with four classrooms organized around central team resource centers. These team “labs” provided students with computers and other resources, and incorporated common office and planning space for teachers within each cluster to further reinforce team communication. In 1994, Burr Ridge won the Award of Distinction for Excellence in the Design of Educational Environments from the Illinois Association of School Boards. The project is especially significant for Wight & Company because 65% of the firm’s work today is in the PK-12 education market.
